Tomorrow begins tonight
Illini Chabad Celebration event
May 15 2012 – Iyar 23 5772
Bryn Mawr Country Club, Lincolnwood, Illinois

Why are we here tonight? Bev and I have been active at the university almost since we graduated and left, and I have been a member of the university foundation board since 1991. Over that time we have observed and become familiar with many organizations and groups of the student body.

It is in the past several years that we have seen, observed, and become more familiar with Rabbi Dovid and Goldie Tiechtel, and the work and impact of the inline Chabad on the campus of CU.

College prepares students for life experience. We have watched Illini Chabad enhance and enrich the college campus and learning experience. The exposure to diversity, encouragement and development of leadership by challenging students to think, engaging students to plan and implement the many programs and activities offered throughout the school year, whether it be community service, lunch at the union, establish and maintain a kosher kitchen for meals, ice cream socials, the spring vacation trip to Berlin, Germany, the planning and attending of the summer trip to Mexico for environmental studies, or free Friday night Sabbath dinners.

Let me tell you about our experience last fall. Bev and I were invited to attend.....it was a happening. 150 students attended a five course dinner prepared by students, supervised by Goldie Tiechtel, the rabbi's wife. The energy, passion and camaraderie were extraordinary. We observed the reality of a true center of student life on campus.

We are also aware of the sensitivity of the Illini Chabad leadership in supporting and nurturing relationships with students, alumni and parents by direct involvement in critical life and death circumstances of families of students; crisis assistance whenever, and as needed 24/7. Beverly and I have witnessed this support with a student's family close to us.

Now, how do we further relate to Illini Chabad?

I was fortunate to attend U of I on a football scholarship, enroll in the commerce school, play football on a championship team, introduce elsner and have a great college experience, including meeting and marrying Beverly 60 years ago.

I was truly prepared to go out in the world with that background, graduated from Law school, served in the army in Korean War, elected to the legislature, and with a little luck and I attribute my experience at Illinois as my foundation. We are here tonight to celebrate leadership awards to students of Illinois Chabad, and support the programs and work of Rabbi Dovid and Goldie Tiechtel which enhances the college and life experience of not only Jewish students, but all students that pass through the doors, and participate in their programs and activities.

I want to leave you with one thought: learn, earn and give back.

That is why we are here tonight. Thank you for your friendship and support. Go Illini!
